Understanding heart disease

Your skeleton is not static. Bones, cartilage, tendons, and joints are living tissue — constantly under load, constantly repairing themselves. For most of your life, this repair process keeps pace with the wear and tear. But at some point, for many people, it doesn't.

Osteoarthritis — the most common reason people need joint replacement surgery — is what happens when the smooth cartilage lining a joint wears down completely. Without that cushioning layer, bone rubs directly on bone. The joint becomes inflamed, stiff, and eventually so painful that ordinary movements — getting out of a chair, walking to the kitchen, climbing a single flight of stairs — become exhausting exercises in tolerating pain

It is worth saying clearly: joint pain at this level is not something you simply have to live with. It is a mechanical problem with a mechanical solution. Joint replacement surgery has been performed millions of times and is one of the most studied and refined procedures in all of medicine. The outcomes are predictable, the recovery is well understood, and the improvement in quality of life is, for most patients, dramatic and immediate.

The same is true for spinal conditions. A herniated disc pressing on a nerve, or vertebrae that have become unstable and are grinding against each other, can cause pain so severe that it is disabling. Surgery — when conservative treatments have failed — can address the mechanical cause directly, often with results that patients describe as transformative.

Why do people travel to India for heart treatment?

Orthopedic surgery is one of the areas where the cost gap between India and Western countries is most stark. A total knee replacement that costs $35,000–$70,000 in the United States can be performed in India for $5,000–$8,000 — using the same implants, manufactured by the same global companies (Zimmer Biomet, DePuy Synthes, Stryker), with surgeons who perform hundreds of these procedures every year.

Volume matters in orthopedic surgery. A surgeon who performs 300 knee replacements a year has a degree of precision and familiarity with the procedure that translates directly into better outcomes, fewer complications, and faster patient recovery. Many of India's leading orthopedic surgeons are in exactly this position.

The post-operative experience for international patients is also well established. Physiotherapy begins the same day as surgery. Dedicated international patient coordinators manage the entire journey from medical visa to the flight home. Most patients are ready to travel within 10–14 days of a knee or hip replacement.
