Understanding heart disease

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse — or after 6 months if the woman is over 35. By this definition, it affects approximately 1 in 6 couples worldwide. It is not a niche condition or a rare misfortune. It is something that a very large number of families quietly go through, often without telling anyone.

The causes are varied and often not what people assume. Roughly a third of cases are due to factors in the woman, a third to factors in the man, and a third to a combination of both — or to no identifiable cause at all. This means that infertility investigations need to look at both partners simultaneously, not assume that the problem lies in one direction or the other.

The emotional weight of infertility is significant, and it is worth acknowledging directly. Trying to conceive month after month, going through cycles of hope and disappointment, attending appointments and receiving test results — it is exhausting in a way that is difficult to describe to people who haven't experienced it. Good fertility care recognises this. The clinical side of IVF is only part of what matters.

The practical reality, though, is that modern reproductive medicine has made real progress. IVF, ICSI, egg donation, sperm donation, and other techniques give many couples who could not conceive naturally a genuine chance. The success rates are not 100% — they never will be — but they are meaningful. And with the right team, the right investigations, and a clear plan, most couples have options.

Why do people travel to India for heart treatment?

The cost of a single IVF cycle in the United States is $18,000–$30,000 — and that is before factoring in the medication costs, which can add $4,000–$7,000 per cycle. In the UK, NHS-funded cycles are increasingly restricted, and private IVF runs £5,000–£8,000 per attempt. Multiple cycles, which are often needed, multiply these costs rapidly.

In India, a complete IVF with ICSI cycle — including all consultations, monitoring scans, egg retrieval, fertilisation, and embryo transfer — typically costs $4,000–$7,000. The medications are largely the same. The laboratory standards in accredited fertility centres are equivalent. The embryologists are trained to international standards.

India also has a very practical advantage for international patients: the geography of an IVF cycle suits medical travel better than most procedures. The active treatment phase — from the start of stimulation medication to embryo transfer — takes 4–6 weeks, but the majority of that time involves self-administered injections at home and monitoring scans that can be done with a local doctor. Patients typically fly to India for the egg retrieval procedure and the embryo transfer, each of which is a half-day outpatient visit. The rest of the cycle can be coordinated remotely.
